September 28, 2025 Writing Prompts for the Week
Happy Sunday! Just a few short days and we’re into the season of jack o’lanterns, ghosties and ghouls, and overfilling bags of candy.
Might I recommend digging into a classic scary story or novel? If you’ve never read Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House…now’s the perfect time.
But until your copy arrives (or until you’ve got a moment to pop into your local bookstore), how about a few prompts?
This Week’s Prompts*
Carol knew better, but she certainly wouldn't do better.
The light chirps were crickets and the low buzzing was the frogs.
Write a scene in which someone discovers they've lost something they never thought they could lose.
Eli's life had been bookended by marches; his mother going into labor at an anti-war protest in 1968 and the Memorial Day parade that ended it.
Soft music drifted from beneath the door and Andre paused before putting his key in the lock.
It wasn't magic per se, but the shop's biggest seller was perpetually the dribble cups.
She shivered; the night was cold and the blanket the paramedic had given her was thin.
*How to Use These Prompts: The italicized prompts let you create your writing entirely from scratch; the non-italicized prompts are intended as your first line and jumping off point. But, at the same time, there are no rules. Write on!
Book(s) We’re Reading This Week
The Killer Question by Janice Hallett
Hallett writes mysteries, but with a twist: The story unfolds through texts, emails, notes, and other such communication in lieu of standard prose. It’s a fun conceit and still makes for a compelling story. This mystery has to do with murder (of course) but also pub trivia. What’s not to love?

I just give myself permission to suck. I delete about 90 percent of my first drafts...so it doesn’t really matter much if on a particular day I write beautiful and brilliant prose that will stick in the minds of my readers forever, because there’s a 90 percent chance I’m just gonna delete whatever I write anyway. I find this hugely liberating.
Top (Published) First Line of the Week
There she was, as welcome in this insular community as fresh air in a multiplex, a woman who, rumor had it, risked being happy.
