June 22, 2025 Writing Prompts for the Week
Happy Sunday! I’ve been seeing a lot of turkeys in my yard lately and, while I’ll admit that I find their little prehistoric heads a little freaky and noticing them out of the corner of my eye is a little unsettling…
It is kind of cool to see nature up close and personal. So, in the spirit of looking at things with a new perspective, I looked up what turkeys symbolize: Abundance and the bounty of nature’s blessings. Now that I can get behind.
Is there anything that’s unsettling or otherwise upsetting you this week that you could change with a different perspective? Just an idea…
In the meantime, here are some prompts!
This Week’s Prompts*
"That is the BEST turnip I've ever seen!" Verna exclaimed.
There it was again, a low hum; why did no one else seem bothered by it?
Write a scene in which two people reach for the same last box of cereal in a grocery store.
"Any takers?" he asked, casually ignoring my extended hand.
When the breeze blew across the grasses, we three paused and savored the sound.
"Aw, give it to him, Cosmo!"
The rain was falling in fitful spurts, like from a kinked garden hose.
*How to Use These Prompts: The italicized prompts let you create your writing entirely from scratch; the non-italicized prompts are intended as your first line and jumping off point. But, at the same time, there are no rules. Write on!
Book(s) We’re Reading This Week
Didion and Babitz by Lili Anolik
This book dives into the complicated friendship (sometimes enemy-ship) between writers Joan Didion and Eve Babitz. It’s an interesting look at their relationship, as well as a look at the literary and music scenes in California and New York in the 60s and 70s. If I had one gripe, it might be that the author’s writing style is…unexpected. She uses a lot of incomplete sentences and casual asides. It’s not a bad thing per se, but it’s definitely noticeable. Let me know if you read it, too; I’d love your thoughts.

A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.

🎧 If you, like me, are fascinated by the writing habits of other writers, then you’ll love the “The Writer Files” podcast. Each week the host interviews acclaimed and/or award-winning writers to find out how they do what they do.
📚 Now, I’m happy to spend money on books. (Maybe too happy.) But I also don’t mind a deal, which is why I love Bookbub. Each day, I get an email with $1.99 and $2.99 ebook deals for genres and authors I’ve selected—for free. It’s one of the few emails I open every day.
Sometimes my creativity is just…lacking. And, if it’s true that creativity is a muscle that can be built, that’s nobody’s fault but my own. Here’s how one writer and entrepreneur posits that we can all become idea-generating dynamos.
