January 5 2025 Writing Prompts for the Week

Happy Sunday! It’s a whole new year and a whole new chance to get your writing practice on track.

BUT…

New Year’s Resolutions aren’t the way to go. (Obvious, right?) Instead, why not practice re-committing to your writing goals each week? Perhaps Sundays might be the right days to do it. 😉 Let’s dig into this week’s cornucopia of writing prompts!

This Week’s Prompts*

  1. White, fluffy, a bit on the chubby side, and not a single mean bone in her body. What a pup.

  2. Describe the smell of smoke and the last time you smelled it.

  3. For the fourth time today, Carla crossed her fingers and, this time—thanks to open-toed shoes and a trick that had made her quickly popular in third grade and then, as things go with children, very unpopular—also crossed her toes.

  4. What’s the first quote that come to mind from your favorite movie? Replace one work with “plastic” and then use that line to start your writing.

  5. The rain had started quietly that day, making the transition from mist to droplets almost imperceptibly.

  6. “Love me or leave me!” read the t-shirt I pulled out from the pile.

  7. Corduroy marks criss-crossed his cheeks; it seems the professor had been sleeping at his desk again, using his arms to rest his head and marring his desk calendar with drool.

*How to Use These Prompts: The italicized prompts let you create your writing entirely from scratch; the non-italicized prompts are intended as your first line and jumping off point. But, at the same time, there are no rules. Write on!

Book(s) We’re Reading This Week

The Plague and I by Betty MacDonald
This is a surprisingly upbeat, enjoyable, and, yes, funny memoir about spending a year in a tuberculosis sanatorium. I know: You weren’t expecting that sentence to end like that, were you? It’s an enjoyable read and a fascinating look at a little-mentioned time in American history.

Your intuition knows what to write, so get out of the way.

Ray Bradbury

🏆 There are a lot of “best books of 2024” lists, but how about a list of the most underrated books? That’s what you’ll find here.

🗒️ Speaking of “best of,” how about setting yourself up with the best notebook/notepad? Sometimes the right tools make all the difference.

🕰️ Ever wonder how much time Americans spend reading per day? Well, wonder no more, friend.
